How to Fix Lifting Acrylic Nails: 5 Salon Secrets No One Tells You.

Lifting is one of the most frustrating issues with acrylic nails, but it’s also one of the most preventable. Many clients assume lifting happens because of poor-quality products, but the real culprit is often application technique. Here are five lesser-known tricks that salon professionals use to ensure acrylic stays put.
First, temperature plays a bigger role than most people realize. If the monomer (liquid) is too cold, it won’t flow as smoothly, leading to uneven application and lifting. Warming the monomer bottle slightly by placing it in warm water for a few minutes before use can improve consistency and adhesion. Just be careful not to overheat it, as extreme temperatures can alter the chemical properties.
Second, the angle of the brush matters more than you might think. Holding the brush at a 45-degree angle when applying acrylic allows the product to hug the natural nail curve, reducing gaps where lifting can occur. Many beginners hold the brush straight on, which creates a weaker bond. Practicing the correct angle can make a noticeable difference in longevity.
Third, the “flash cure” method is a game-changer for preventing lifting. Instead of applying a full bead and curing all at once, try curing the first thin layer for just five seconds under the lamp before adding more product. This creates a tacky base that helps subsequent layers adhere better.
Fourth, expired products are a common but overlooked cause of lifting. Monomer and powder can degrade over time, especially if not stored properly. Always check expiration dates and store products in a cool, dark place to maintain their effectiveness.
Finally, the cotton ball test is a quick way to check if lifting is due to poor prep. After dehydrating the nail, press a dry cotton ball against it. If the cotton sticks, there’s still moisture or oil present, meaning the nail wasn’t prepped thoroughly enough. Re-cleaning with a dehydrator ensures a perfectly dry surface before application.
By implementing these techniques, nail techs can drastically reduce lifting and provide clients with manicures that last. The key is attention to detail—small adjustments in application and prep can lead to major improvements in wear time.
